In the wake of the cyclone’s assault on Cairns on 13 December, all four major banks have stepped forward with various forms of assistance for both businesses and households affected by the calamity.

The National Australian Bank (NAB) took the lead by initiating disaster relief grants of $1,000 for eligible customers impacted by the cyclone.

They also offered loan deferrals, reduced repayment plans, and hardship options.

Following suit, ANZ and the Commonwealth Bank (CBA) extended their support.

CBA is providing customised payment arrangements, waiving fees and charges, temporary overdrafts, and additional loans or emergency credit limit increases.

ANZ announced short-term relief on home loans and other products and some business loans (however noted possible interest charges during that period), along with waiving certain fees.

ANZ provides $100k donation

ANZ has also increased its support for flood victims by donating $100,000 to aid those affected by ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper in Far North Queensland.

This donation will be split between two organisations involved in disaster response and recovery efforts: the Australian Red Cross and the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR).

ANZ general manager Queensland, Jackie Auf der Maur, said: “Our thoughts are with all of those impacted and we thank the Queensland Government for kicking off the recovery appeal with its $1.5 million donation.

“Over the last few days, we’ve seen how resilient the people of Far North Queensland have been in coming together. The devastation of the flooding continues to impact the community and during this difficult time, it is important they are supported.

“This donation is one way we can help the community recover, in addition to the financial support measures we are offering our customers.”

Westpac has also introduced a series of support initiatives aimed at assisting affected businesses and households.

For instance, small-business customers who meet specific eligibility criteria can access a $3,000 grant per customer group.

Additionally, Westpac is offering personalised support to affected customers through a comprehensive disaster relief package, including options like loan deferrals of up to three months and emergency credit card relief.

Suncorp’s local tradespeople are actively aiding customers as the clean-up process commences following ex-TC Jasper.

With around 900 claims received, including more than 650 for homes since 10 December, Suncorp Group’s executive general manager of home claims customers Alli Smith highlighted the efforts of local tradespeople in clearing damaged homes and making emergency repairs.

Ms Smith emphasised that its claims contact centres are available 24/7 to assist impacted customers.

Deputy State Recovery Coordinator appointed for FNQ recovery

Meanwhile, the Queensland government has appointed deputy commissioner Mike Wassing AFSM as the Deputy State Recovery Coordinator.

Mr Wassing will work alongside Queensland State Recovery Coordinator Major General (Rtd) Jake Ellwood and the Queensland Reconstruction Authority to aid Far North Queensland’s recovery from ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

His responsibilities include coordinating disaster recovery operations, providing strategic advice to government agencies, delivering regular updates on recovery operations, and overseeing recovery efforts.

Premier of Queensland, Steven Miles, emphasised the extensive impact on primary producers, small businesses, tourism, and infrastructure, stating: “Now the clean-up begins and the recovery effort is in full force.”
